The Bottom Line
SiteGround offers a well-rounded set of services in the Shared, WordPress, Cloud, Enterprise, and Reseller categories. Pricing isn’t the most competitive but can be considered value for money, given the benefits offered.

SiteGround is a top option for web hosting and offers some economic pricing plans. We’ll be looking at the various types of hosting services offered by SiteGround and how much value they can add to your website.

Founded in 2004 by three university students from Sofia, Bulgaria, SiteGround now employs a large team of more than 400 engineers at six offices. They have four data centers strategically placed in three continents and hosts more than 2.0 million websites.

They were also recommended as one of the three “official” web hosting providers by the WordPress Team. Let’s take a detailed look at SiteGround’s services in our review.

Siteground Shared Hosting Plans

SiteGround, like most web hosting providers, starts its offerings with the most basic type of hosting – Shared Web Hosting. Starting at $6.99 a month, SiteGround’s “StartUp” plan hosts a single website with 10GB storage, up to 10,000 visits, unmetered traffic, a free SSL, Daily backups and a host of additional features like a Content Delivery Network (CDN), email, and unlimited databases.

The only thing you would typically see in competitor plans is a free Domain, SiteGround does not offer that. That’s quite a lot for a shared plan, but there’s a catch. The price is for a 12-month contract, and renewal is much higher at $14.99. The actual monthly cost is $19.99.

The higher “GrowBig” and “GoGeek” plans host unlimited websites, offer all the features of the “StartUp” plan, higher storage, higher monthly visits, and many other features such as on-demand backups, white-label, Staging environments, and GIT repos. They are offered at $9.99 a month and $14.99 a month respectively.

SiteGround offers round-the-clock expert support and will migrate your existing website for $30. You can also use their free WordPress Migrator plugin to migrate your website on your own at no cost.

Siteground Managed WordPress Hosting Plans

SiteGround rebrands its regular Web Hosting plans for WordPress without any additional cost. It continues to use the “StartUp”, “GrowBig”, and “GoGeek” plans but adds a range of WordPress related features like WordPress installation, migrations, updates, WordPress CLI, and Secure Shell (SSH).

Pricing starts at $6.99 a month and follows the same strategy with higher renewal rates and a 12-month contract. In comparison to the other web hosting services recommended by WordPress, SiteGround is almost double in cost but does not offer a lot of extra value. As a matter of fact, it cuts down on the free Domain.

SiteGround offers extra security in the form of the latest versions of PHP, WordPress, and automatic managed updates. SiteGround states that it adds dozens of custom firewall rules that protect websites from known threats each year.

It also boasts of high-performance thanks to high-speed SSD storage, Google Cloud powered hosting, advanced caching, SG Optimizer, and CloudFlare CDN. More about these later in the article.

In addition, you will also be able to use the Weebly website builder to create an elegant website. You will also have access to many e-commerce tools like PrestaShop, CS-Cart, Magento, Zen Cart, ShoWare, OpenCart, and Axis.

SiteGround WordPress Hosting pricing plans

If you need an e-commerce powered website, then SiteGround offers specialized hosting plans for WooCommerce. Pricing and benefits are identical to WordPress Hosting.

However, these plans offer click-and-install Getting Started Wizards, which allow you to set up your WordPress website with WooCommerce within minutes. The Professional Storefront theme will be auto-installed. The free WordPress migration tool and $30 per site managed transfer offer apply here too.

Siteground Managed Cloud Hosting Plans

SiteGround’s Cloud hosting replaces both its VPS and Dedicated hosting services. It does not offer dedicated servers any longer. Cloud hosting, or VPS hosting, as it is typically called, refers to sharing resources on a physical server.

The main difference, when compared to Shared hosting, is that each Cloud hosting account has its own virtual operating system. So your data and applications are well isolated.

You can choose one of four Cloud Hosting plans beginning with the “Entry” plan at $80.00 a month. It offers a 2-CPU Cores, 4GB RAM, 40GB of SSD Storage, and 5TB of data transfer. But the best thing about SiteGround’s Cloud Hosting is the Custom Cloud Plan Calculator:

The Custom Plans allow you to go all the way from the specifications offered with the “Entry” plan right up to a 320 Core, 128GB RAM, 1TB Storage power-house. These hosting units are built upon private lightweight Linux containers that utilize SSD Storage, and dedicated CPU and RAM resources.

You can choose servers from SiteGround’s datacenters in London, Chicago, Singapore, and Amsterdam.

SiteGround offers a fully managed service for its Cloud Hosting offerings along with CentOS, Apache/Nginx, managed PHP versions, MySQL, and Postgre support. DevOps teams work continuously to optimize server specifications to ensure high performance.

Health checks are done regularly to ensure performance and security.

SiteGround Enterprise Web Hosting Plans

During a short chat with one of SiteGround’s support agents, I was informed that it no longer offers Dedicated hosting. It is unfortunate as this is a type of hosting that is quite popular. SiteGround offers Enterprise Hosting to bridge this gap.

Enterprise Hosting provides bespoke solutions based on SiteGround’s cloud architecture. They provide fully managed, reliable architecture that matches your development workflows.

Solutions are built with three layers for load balancing, web, and database nodes and are usually made redundant across its intercontinental data centers.

SiteGround follows a custom onboarding process that invests time to understand your needs and provides you with a Personal Account Manager that will be dedicated to your account. You will also have access to their 24/7 support services.

Enterprise Hosting comes with all the standard tools and technologies. It supports CMSs like WordPress, Drupal, Joomla, and Magento. SiteGround builds its hosting services on NGINX, Apache, PHP, MySQL, and Linux containers.

Pricing is not provided on the website. You will need to talk to SiteGround to get a custom quote. However, it provides a guide regarding the type of budget you should have in mind to opt for Enterprise Hosting. Monthly budget ranges begin at $2,000 and go all the way up to $10,000+.

SiteGround Reseller Hosting

One way to build a web hosting business is to become a White label seller of an already established Web hosting services provider like SiteGround. Such a set up allows you to sell web hosting services and earn extra revenue.

SiteGround’s Reseller Hosting is quite straightforward. It offers a single plan with 40GB web space, 24/7 reseller support, and unmetered traffic for an unlimited number of websites. You pay just $14.99 a month on a 12-month contract.

The most important aspect of Reseller Hosting is that it allows you to use your own branding so that clients don’t see any SiteGround branding. You can, however, leverage all of its features and benefits while doing so.

A detailed look at the “GoGeek” Reseller plan shows a host of feature; almost everything offered to its direct clients.

SiteGround Reseller Hosting

We’ve looked at all the types of hosting offered by SiteGround and their respective pricing plans. But can you determine the best service for you simply based on figures? Let’s look at the other aspects of SiteGround’s web hosting that you need to consider before selecting a plan.

back to menu ↑

Ease of Use

SiteGround sports a one-page signup process that is quite straightforward. Once you have registered, all its services can be managed via the new client area (cPanel/Dashboard), which was introduced in 2019.

The new Dashboard allows you to install WordPress (optionally with WooCommerce) with a single-click, migrate your existing website, purchase plugins, and manage user access for both FTP and email. This Dashboard is essential for White label resellers as it allows them to provide logins to their clients.

Availability and Uptime

SiteGround boasts of 99.99% uptime and has been able to deliver almost perfect uptime most of the time. It improves the availability of your website with four data centers across the US, UK, Europe, and South-Asia. These, along with the CloudFlare Content Delivery Network (CDN), allow your website to be redundantly located on multiple servers so that users experience little to no latency.

All of SiteGround’s data centers feature redundant power and network resources to ensure minimum downtime. Power is backed up with both redundant sources as well as generators to avoid any points of failure.

Website Performance

Performance is something SiteGround takes very seriously. In addition to its uptime guarantee, a well-optimized site is known to load in a little over half-a-second. This is thanks to its globally distributed servers and CDN partnerships.

SiteGround’s Supercacher technology allows you to choose between static and dynamic caching, in addition to Memcached, which is a versatile open-source caching system.

SSD storage, NGINX servers, HTTP/2, which is the recommended standard for high-speed connectivity, and PHP7 are some of the other tools in its arsenal. This allows certain parts of your website, like its images, to load much faster from the server memory.

The SG Optimizer WordPress plugin will be in control of all these performance tools and services to ensure the optimum performance of your website. It is a specialized plugin made by SiteGround for WordPress websites.

Website Security

On the server-front, SiteGround takes all possible precautions to ensure the security of your website. It provides free daily backups and on-demand backups (higher plans only) to ensure that your site is always safe in case of an emergency.

Compliance is another important area, and SiteGround ensures all regulatory compliance standards such as PCI and GDPR are adhered to by all its service offerings.

SiteGround also provides many tools like SpamAssassin, SpamExperts, hotlink protection, and IP blocklists to secure your website in addition to their SG Site Scanner, which alerts you if you are under attack. You will also be protected from malware with SiteChek and Hack Alert from GlobalSign, which are automatic site scanning plugins.

In addition to all of this, SiteGround recently introduced its AI-powered scanner, which defends against rogue bots that try to infiltrate your website.

Physical security is also taken very seriously. SiteGround’s data centers are protected with redundant power and network resources, 24/7 human monitoring, access control with biometrics, video surveillance, and bulletproof lobbies.

Pricing Plans

SiteGround is no exception in terms of pricing plans. It follows the industry standard of offering lower rates with higher contract periods and then follows them up with much higher renewal rates.

Given that this is normal in the web hosting industry, the only point to consider is that SiteGround doesn’t offer the cheapest pricing plans.

One other important point is that while SiteGround allows you to trial their services for a month, it adds a “Setup fee” of $14.95 on top of the usual rates. So the trial may not really be worth it.

You may be better off using their 15-day money-back guarantee, in contrast to the usual 30-days offered by many other web hosting providers.

You will need to keep in mind that site migrations are not free unless you do it yourself using the SiteGround Migrator plugin. If you require assistance, it comes at the cost of $30 per site.

back to menu ↑

Customer Support

Support is available via live chat, phone, and email. SiteGround uses a ticketing system to manage all its support requests.

In my experience, the live chat agent was very prompt and pleasant. I was able to resolve my query within minutes, with not more than a few seconds between each response.

Migrations are one area in which SiteGround offers extra support for non-technical users. However, this service comes at the cost of $30 per site.

In addition, it also offers “Advanced Priority Support” on the “GoGeek” plan and higher providing priority support through the most experienced agents.

SiteGround’s Enterprise hosting comes with a dedicated “Personal Account Manager”. This benefit adds value to the plan and ensures that enterprise customers receive the specialized attention they pay for.
