Best Web Hosting Providers 2021

Of the estimated 1.3 billion websites, about 455 million self-hosted sites are using WordPress. As of 2020, there is roughly about 330,000 hosting providers around the world. Most internet users are in Asia, but North America has the most web hosting providers.

The largest provider, Go Daddy; manages 77 million domain names or 15.2% of known websites. Followed by Amazon Web Services (AWS) which accounts for 8.9% of websites. The third and fourth runners up are 1&1 and Google Cloud Platform.

So, what should you do? In this review, I have listed a few web hosting providers to choose from. Now let’s dive deeper of the hosting providers below. Let’s go!

Free vs Paid Web Hosting Providers

There is a big difference between free and paid web hosing providers. Based on experience, I noticed a big difference between free and paid web hosting providers. I signed up at AwardSpace, a free hosting provider and here are few things to remember if you decide to go this route.

  • The “Free” hosting can rather limiting in terms of flexibility. It may be a cheap way to start a site, but you’ll need a robust solution as traffic grows.
  • You still have to register a domain name as opposed to a free domain registration with a paid hosting. The price for a domain name is between $12 – $15 per year.
  • You will need to purchase domain privacy and it will cost you between $15-$25 dollars. Domain privacy helps to keep you as the domain owner private.

Based on personal experience, I would recommend you not use a service where you build your site using a 3rd party software like Wix and Weebly.

Bluehost – Best Web Hosting Provider Overall

BlueHost Web Hosting Review

Bluehost is among the best hosting providers in terms of size. They manage their own servers in-house with a 50,000 square foot facility.

They have 24/7 support by phone or live chat if you have issues with your website and web hosting.

If your site keeps growing, you can easily upgrade to managed WordPress at ease. Bluehost can speed up your site and improve web security as your site grows. In addition to that, you also can get you more control if you update to VPS or dedicating hosting.

Bluehost is an overall fast and reliable web host provider. The WordPress team awarded them as the top web hosting solution of all levels. Their hosting plans are comparatively inexpensive among most hosting providers out there. I personally recommend Bluehost for a beginners looking to start a blog.

HostGator – Best Site Growth Plans

HostGator Web Hosting Review

Founded in 2002, HostGator boasts of 99.9% uptime, a 45-day money back guarantee, and their “migration team” can help transfer your site to their hosting if needed. They employ over 1,000 employees to boost their a 24/7 customer support system.

HostGator appears to be stepping up their game by expanding cloud solutions. They also offer impressive small business services like free VoIP phone, dedicated IP, and speedy 6 core CPU.

For the sake of you reading this, I wanted to see what their max hosting would provide. Check out the power Hostgators “Enterprise Server” offers.

  • 8 Core / 16 Thread
  • Intel Xeon-D CPU
  • 30 GB RAM
  • 1 TB SSD
  • Unmetered Bandwidth

This is the most powerful plan they have, so imagine how fast your website would be. If your site grows, you can upgrade your server to Enterprise. The SSD (solid state drive) seen above is what your iPod or iPhone would use. No moving parts, just super-fast and responsive data transmission.

Unlike some web hosting providers, HostGator does include IT support in all its plans. If you want a hosting plan that’s cheap and includes IT support, this is the host for you.

DreamHost – Most Affordable Plans

DreamHost Web Hosting Review

DreamHost boasts of an industry-leading free trial period — a full 97-day money-back guarantee — and transparent pricing that doesn’t increase after your initial contract. You may notice a few other perks such as unlimited traffic, 50 GB SSD storage, and a free SSL certificate.

DreamHost offers a free plugin that allows you to migrate your WordPress site to the server. The site migration is easy and quick.

“DreamPress, DreamPress Plus, and DreamPress Pro” are pre-built WordPress hosting solutions for busy sites. These super traffic plans support from 100,000 to 1,000,000 monthly visitors with a price range of $16.95 to $71.95 per month.

In addition to shared hosting and managed WordPress hosting, DreamHost offers upgrades to VPS and cloud hosting, as well as dedicated servers should you ever need them. If you truly do get thousands of visitors to your website, you would probably want to upgrade.

Their customer service differs slightly from the norm in that email support is available 24/7. The Live chat is only on during business hours, and you actually have to pay around $9.95 to get technical support over the phone.

DreamHost offers a FREE shared hosting plan (including email hosting) to non-profit, charitable organizations registered in the United States. This discount applies to a single shared hosting plan per non-profit, hosted within only one account, for US-based 501(c)(3) organizations. This discount remains active for the lifetime of the DreamHost account.

Hostinger – Top Value Hosting

Hostinger Web Hosting Review

If your budget is a major factor you may be able to find a good deal with Hostinger. This employee-owned company was established in 2004 and now has 29 million users in over one hundred countries (collectively with its subsidiaries).

Like most web hosting plans, there are small hidden costs for a simple site with limited traffic. You can “get online with Hostinger” with minimal cost. Their four years of hosting is priced at $0.99/monthly, plus domain registration and privacy could be around $60.00 upfront. That’s a lot of bang for your buck!

Some of these rates are promotion so they’ll go up at renewal. Even after the promotional pricing ends, the pricing is still super low. The single-site plan only costs $2.15/month, one of the lowest rates in the industry.

A2 Hosting – Fast & Reliable Shared Hosting

A2 Hoting Web Hosting Review

A2 Hosting offers a no hassle money back guarantee, a reputation for speed.

I personally don’t like their basic hosting plans. You’ll get a free SSL (HTTPS) certificate and 100 GB ultra-fast SSD storage, but I think the price is a bit too high to get started compared to other providers.

I like their free site migrations that come with every hosting package. If you’ve set your site up on a bad host and want to migrate, this is a fantastic feature and it’s free!

Like many of the other web hosts, there are 1-click installs for all the popular CMS tools like WordPress, Magento, and Drupal. If you don’t their services, you can call their customer support to get a refund with their “no-hassle return” policy.

If you stick around, you can really capitalize on purchasing their services on tri-annually basis, which will save you more money in the long-run.

GreenGeeks – Hosting with Eco-friendly claims

GreenGeeks Web Hosting Review

GreenGeeks are not a very well known hosting provider compared to others, but there aren’t new to the market either. As of 2020, they claim to host half a million websites and serve 40,000 customers. They were founded in California and use renewable energy to power their hosting services.

I noticed they have five data centers, four in the U.S and one in Amsterdam. I don’t think it would make a noticeable negative impact on speed but it’s worth noting.

Also, I don’t see the bells and whistles other providers boast about in regard to hardware or speed enhancement. They do have SSD drives and optimized data bases.

I should also mention GreenGeeks touts some forward-thinking technologies like PHP 7, HTTP3/QUIC, and Secure vFS. For an explanation and more on their platform click here. With their plans, you’ll get everything you need to build and manage your website at a great price.

If you need help they have exceptional 24/7 support that is available by phone, chat, or via their ticket system. They are typically very quick to respond and can assist with a wide range of issues.

WP Engine – Best Managed WordPress Hosting

WP Engine Web Hosting Review

When most people think of managed WordPress hosting, they think of WP Engine.

And for good reason — it provides a truly excellent product, but it comes with a hefty price though. A fully managed WordPress host is noticeably more expensive than shared hosting provider.

WP Engine’s lowest-priced plan is $30/month, and that’s only for one 10GB site with max 25,000 visitors/month. Why the high price for hosting? Here are a few reasons why:

  • They only specialize in WordPress hosting (the name says it all).
  • They have three environment stages – Development, Stage, and Production. If you are startup company, you will see how the testing environment will be important for you.
  • The Genesis framework theme comes free with hosting.
  • Geo-targeting and local marketing for your website are included in the plan.
  • You will get constant updates to your WordPress core files, which is managed in-house.
  • You will get a fast, responsive and efficient website. This is great deal for SEO purpose.

I would recommend WP Engine to a startup that planned on having decent web traffic. Or a person or business that needed to test functionality of their site often.

I don’t currently feel comfortable recommending a beginner to this hosting unless they have a solid plan and clear picture of their business roadmap.

InMotion Hosting – Best VPS Hosting

inMotion Web Hosting Review

InMotion is a veteran in the hosting space. They have top notch technology that can be custom fit to your needs. Please allow me to list some of the benefits here:

  • A 90-day money back guarantee
  • 17 years of being rated highly by CNET
  • A+ Rating from the Better Business Bureau
  • 99.999% uptime
  • Their site is very easy to navigate and understand
  • Pay $99 for an expert to design your site and go live in 2 days
  • You can have dedicated servers for $75/month

I also appreciate that none of this support is hidden or hard to find. The phone number is broadcast at the top of the page and the chat support login is easy to find in your admin panel.

InMotion’s support is what makes it stand out from other hosts. If you’re looking for a no-nonsense host with amazing customer support, InMotion is your best option. It’s our favorite pick for small businesses because you’ll be able to get all the help you need.

In addition to shared hosting, InMotion offers upgrades to managed WordPress hosting, VPS hosting, and dedicated servers.

SiteGround – Best Customer Service

Siteground Web Hosting Review recommend Siteground as one of three WordPress hosting Providers in the market and that tells a lot of about their web hosting services. Here are some differentiating factors why they are the best:

  • They are known for excellent customer support
  • Customers have given Siteground a 99.7% happiness rating
  • There data centers on 4 continents
  • Their cloud hosting are powerful and scalable for site growth
  • You’ll get free CDN (content delivery network) included

Their “GrowBig” hosting plan is noteworthy. For $5.95/monthly you can get the following…

  • Unlimited Websites
  • 20 GB Web Space
  • 25,000 Visits Monthly
  • Unmetered Traffic
  • Free SSL, Daily Backup, Free CDN, Free Email
  • Managed WordPress
  • Unlimited Databases
  • 100% renewable energy match
  • 30-Days Money-Back

“Shared Hosting” is simply normal hosting without the WordPress specialization. As WordPress becomes more and more prevalent companies are advertising WordPress specific hosting plans.

For $30 per site, you can have a migration team move your WordPress site to SiteGround hosting. They migrate around 50,000 sites per year.

In some instances, the lowest tier of shared hosting jumps from $4/month to $12 and its highest tier jumps from $12/month to $35. In fact, it was the reason for most of the one-star reviews on TrustPilot. Watch for this when you’re comparing pricing and remember that your hosting plan will last a lot longer than the promotional period.

As with many hosting providers, I do not like the renewal rate here. You initially get an introductory rate that is affordable, but when your hosting renews the price goes up.

SiteGround’s customer support is available 24/7 across all channels — phone, chat, and email — and its knowledge base is rich and well-organized.

SiteGround also has the most transparent uptime: it has a 99.9% annual uptime guarantee (or you get a month of hosting free) and posts both its annual average and the previous month’s uptime right on its site.

Choosing the Right Web Hosting Providers

Every component of your web hosting provider depends on five things: Ease of Use, Availability & Uptime, Speed & Performance, Security, Pricing Plans, and Customer Support.

If you are worried about the price for hosting plans, not all web hosting providers are expensive. They offer starter hosting plans that will allow you to build your website without breaking the bank.

If your new site needs more speed and better performance, you will need to spend more money. Just like with everything else, you get what you paid for and it’s important to think about your readers.
